Proposed Route

Proposed Route for Further Investigation

Since Council endorsed a preferred alignment for further investigation between Maroochydore to Caloundra, work has continued on getting a better understanding of the costing and developing a planning strategy for the coastal corridor which will feed into the feasibility and Business Case for the light rail project.

Council is looking at a number of stages for the light rail – Stage 1 from Maroochydore City Centre to the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital at Kawana (approx 14km) and Stage 2 from the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital to Caloundra (approx. 9 km), with additional future stages to the Sunshine Coast Airport and to Beerwah.

While preliminary costing analysis has been undertaken ($2B from Maroochydore to Caloundra), detailed costing analysis will be undertaken as part of the preparation of the future Business Case. Council is working towards the delivery of light rail on the Sunshine Coast by 2025, subject to approval and funding.

The focus of the light rail project is the provision of reliable, frequent and affordable public transport services, but brings with it a range of other positive spin-offs that will enhance our community connections, business activity, lifestyle and the environment. Council’s commitment is to undertake the studies required to prove up light rail as the most appropriate means of retaining connectivity, while retaining the lifestyle advantages the community enjoys today.

Where to from here

Elected representatives and Council officers have continued to advocate the project to the State government. The next step is the preparation of the Business Case for light rail. Council is prepared to undertake this work on its own, but would ideally like to partner with the State government and/or the private sector to prepare it.
